DeGroote School of Business

Your first days

Your first days at McMaster will bring plenty of new experiences, people to meet, and information to take in. To help you settle in at the DeGroote School of Business, we’ve outlined a few important steps and resources below. Your work entry plan will walk you through what to expect, who you’ll be connecting with, and provide useful links. If anything is unclear, don’t hesitate to reach out to your manager or the Human Resources team.

On or after your official start date with the DeGroote School of Business, and once you have activated your MAC ID, your McMaster employee email account will be automatically created for you. No action is required to activate it. You become eligible once your start date has arrived. McMaster Mail can be accessed here.

All McMaster staff and faculty members are required to have a Working @ McMaster ID badge. You may obtain this badge at the Campus Store in Glmour Hall. Simply ask for a “Working at McMaster” card, and bring a photo ID and your McMaster University employee number. This badge acts as your library card, and you have the option of adding on a campus gym membership or a meal plan for use at various food locations across campus.

Please note: Campus Store hours have changed. Instead, contact axiomrep@mcmaster.ca directly to request this badge. You will receive further instructions on where to go to pick up your badge once it’s ready.

Photo ID requirements

  • It should be recent and similar to a passport photo (headshot only, looking straight into the camera).
  • Have a neutral or smiling expression.
  • Must be in colour, in focus and of good quality (scanned photos of your driver’s license, passport or health card are not acceptable).
  • Must have an uncluttered background and be of you alone (no other people or animals permitted in the photo).
  • Must not contain props (i.e., hats, sunglasses or graduation caps).

During your first days, you will have the opportunity to meet with your new supervisor and be introduced to your new co-workers and many of the key people you will be working with in your new role. Take this opportunity to try and meet as many people as you can—even outside of your immediate work area. The DeGroote School of Business prides itself on its collaborative work environment and you never know who you might get the chance to work with.

If you have your own dedicated desk phone and are having trouble or are unsure about how to navigate around its menu and perform functions in terms of contacts, history, and settings. Please refer to the list of guides for DeGroote’s Avaya phone systems here.

Alternatively, with the Avaya Workplace, you now have the option to use a McMaster Softphone to bring the functionality of your desk phone onto your computer, mobile phone, or tablet devices, giving you the freedom to stay connected no matter where you are working. Learn more about its installation process here.

If you require any accommodation round your office space please discuss this with your supervisor and contact colemk7@mcmaster.ca.
